Welcome to University Elementary at La Fiesta

University Elementary at La Fiesta, a partnership between Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District and Sonoma State University, was founded in 2013 by a group of Sonoma State University professors, Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District teachers and administrators, and local parents who are passionate about hands-on experiential learning promoted through project-based education.

Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified School District is the third largest in Sonoma County with over 6,000 students in grades K-12. University Elementary School at La Fiesta was opened in August 2013 in partnership with Sonoma State University. It's focus is on experiential and project-based learning. Our focus is learning.

Principal, Christina Lunde

Mrs. Lunde can be found walking laps with students on the playground, joining a class for a lesson like observing pollinators in the garden, unpacking a journal entry from the 1700s, or using toothpicks to show her thinking in a math problem, or brainstorming with the UELF team about the next opportunity at University Elementary. Most likely she will be smiling and finding a way to connect with the UELF Community.

Her career began in a 3rd grade class at Olive Elementary School in Novato Unified School District. While at Olive she got the opportunity to teach 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. During those years she developed her deep understanding for the urgency for students to own their learning by having immersive learning experiences through science and history social science while gaining the skills in the academic core content areas of reading, writing, and mathematics. Her classroom was designed with entry points for all students, student agency to process and own the learning, and a strong classroom community of believing in each other and having a safe environment to take risks. Iteration, reflection is how one goes deep in her learning.

Mrs. Lunde is thrilled to be added to the UELF Team. She seeks to build on the momentum of expeditionary learning through project based learning pedagogy while integrating the STEAM content. She is committed to leading University Elementary School toward the goal of becoming an exemplary 21st Century Project Based Learning school.

Our Vision

University Elementary School at La Fiesta will empower children to become active, curious, creative, and effective thinkers in a perse community of learners. Parents, community members, university students, SSU faculty, local teachers, administrators, and the children themselves will work collaboratively to create an effective, reflective, and joyful learning community.

The program is grounded in three tenets we believe are best for educating children:

Constructivism: Children learn best through active, hands-on, structured learning experiences that reflect their interests and take their developmental needs into account.

Diversity: All children benefit from learning about life around the world, and from working alongside others who are both similar to and different from themselves.

Community: Schools and communities are enhanced when educators, parents, children, and members of the local community work together.
